Jonathan Paul Ive was born on 27 February 1967 in Chingford, London. He moved to Stafford when he was about 12. He studied industrial design at Newcastle Polytechnic, graduating with a first class Bachelor of Arts in 1989. While at Newcastle, some of his designs — including a telephone and a hearing aid — were exhibited at the Design Museum in London. After working at the London-based design firm Tangerine, where he designed products for clients including LG and Ideal Standard, he joined Apple full-time in September 1992. He was promoted to senior vice-president of industrial design in the late 1990s after the return of co-founder Steve Jobs, and became chief design officer in 2015, a role he held until his departure in July 2019. Ive's designs include the Apple Watch, iMac, Power Mac G4 Cube, iPod, iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and the user interface of Apple's mobile operating system iOS. He also contributed to architectural projects such as Apple Park and Apple Stores. After leaving Apple, he founded LoveFrom, a creative collective working with Ferrari, Airbnb, OpenAI, and other global brands. He has been chancellor of the Royal College of Art in London since 2017 and a trustee of the British Museum since June 2025. Ive acquired US citizenship in 2012.
